The Month in the Kitchen
Jeremy Round was an excellent food writer. An accomplished cook (he won the Guardian/Mouton Cadet competition in 1982), he was best known as the food writer for The Independent from its first publication until his untimely death in 1989. I used to love his columns which, like my other great favourite of that genre, Jane Grigson, made one enthusiastic and adventurous about food.
This section of the site borrows shamelessly - and he would acknowledge that this is fine, I think - from his wonderful book, The Independent Cook (Pan Cooks series, 1988, reprinted 2001, ISBN 0-330-48046-4). In the foreword to the book, he says that
This book grew out of a series of articles, originally called "The Month in the Kitchen", which I wrote in an attempt to discover when and why fresh foods were at their best - by which I mean most delicious.
So this part of the site is called as it is in tribute to his ideas.
