Last week we went to the excellent Mantegna show at the Louvre.
This head of San Marco is the first picture you see and it is quite staggering in the flesh. The saint’s expression is completely human, the hand in a wholly natural pose as if Mark is pausing to think of something crucial while [...]

Here are my jottings-after-the-visit thoughts on this gallery in Houston.
Set in beautiful old location, with old houses very like Manila as was. Trees, birds (Mynah?), fat red squirrels runing all over the place. Lawns. Manicured but not too much.
Byzantine Chapel — beautiful, but much less actually physically there than I’d thought. [...]

LBF and I went to the Lee Miller exhibition at the V&A today, and utterly great it was too..
I’ve been a big fan of hers for some time now, especially since seeing “The Surrealist and the Photographer” exhibition in Edinburgh about 5 years ago, where there was a good collection of her pictures alongside the [...]

The show is of 18 pieces made since 2002. I really like his early stuff, which I had admittedly seen only in reproduction, and there are [...]

Lovely afternoon today. While G went off to the Trocadero with Rachel and Nico, we took Leggy down to the National Gallery where I had been wanting to re-view the Piero di Cosimo painting of the Satyr mourning over a nymph. It’s one of my favourite paintings of all, with its Molesworth skool [...]

You always find good stuff in the London Review of Books. From the latest edition [subscription only] comes this marvellous account of how they overcame problems of fuel starvation in early Merlin engines fitted to Spitfires:
The most brutal test of the Merlin engine’s fitness came when it was used in combat. In early models, [...]

This week is the last week of the “Robert Frank exhibition”:http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/frank/ at the Tate.
